Don’t trash bus and shelter cleaning positions: ATU 1505

Winnipeg- The Amalgamated Transit Union 1505 is calling on Mayor Brian Bowman to restore the jobs of key maintenance workers as part of the 2020 civic budget. The proposed budget, to be voted on by council this week, eliminates ATU maintenance workers and will result in less bus and shelter cleaning.

“I think we’ve seen this week just how crucial it is to have a properly staffed maintenance department that is stepping up to clean our buses and shelters,” said Romeo Ignacio, ATU President. “Why city council would choose to move ahead to cut these crucial positions when they’re needed more than ever is beyond me.”

In addition to cutting a bus cleaning position, the proposed budget proposes to cut two shelter cleaning positions. ATU members are already stretched thin cleaning garbage, needles and other debris on a regular basis from bus shelters.

“Our members do incredible and often dangerous work, cleaning used needles and broken glass so that Transit shelters are clean for our valued riders,” said James Van Gerwen, ATU Vice President. “If City Council has truly dug in on voting on a budget this week, we hope that they will not cut these vital positions that do so much work for our city.” -30-
