What is Short Term Disability Benefits (STD)?

If you are ill or injured and unable to perform the essential duties of your job continuously during the short term disability waiting period, short term disability benefits can provide you with a level of income to assist you while you are medically unable to work.

What is the STD Waiting Period?

Illness – 3 days or the accumulated sick leave days, whichever is longer. Injury – no waiting period Hospitalized – no waiting period
What is the Maximum Benefit Period?

The benefit period is the maximum number of days you can receive benefit payments so long as you are unable to perform the essential duties of your job.

The maximum benefit period is 26 weeks including accumulated sick leave days and other sources of income.
What Happens if you have an EI, WCB or MPI claim?

You must apply for EI, WCB or MPI if applicable. These benefits are considered first payer. GWL will pay during the waiting period for these benefits. Note that the maximum for the GWL benefits will be 26 weeks including the accumulated sick leave days and other sources of income.

What are the Steps if you are unable to work?

1. Contact your Plan Administrator
2. Apply for EI, WCB, MPI – if applicable
3. Complete GWL STD form

How does the payment process work?

If you have accumulated sick leave days, you must exhaust these days first. Once the sick leave days are exhausted, you would receive benefits from EI, WCB or MPI where applicable. GWL STD benefit will pay for any applicable waiting period associated for these benefits. Once EI, WCB, MPI benefits are exhausted, GWL STD benefits will continue to pay up to the remaining eligible weeks.

The order of income replacement is:
1. Exhaust Sick Leave benefits first
2. Apply for EI, WCB or MPI if applicable – GWL will pay benefits during the waiting period for these benefits
3. EI, WCB or MPI benefits are paid up to the applicable eligible number of weeks, where applicable
4. Once EI, WCB or MPI benefits have been exhausted, GWL will resume paying benefits up to maximum of 26 weeks including the accumulated sick days and the benefit period from other sources of income.

Example: Member has accumulated 4 weeks sick leave. Eligible for EI. EI waiting period (WP) is 1 week, Maximum 15 weeks.
