In Memory of Irvine "Jubal" Fraser
On February 14, 2017, Winnipeg Transit Bus Operator, Irvine "Jubal" Fraser, 58, was stabbed to death while on duty after an altercation with a passenger, Brian Kyle Thomas, 22, who refused to leave Fraser's bus when it reached its last stop at the University of Manitoba. Thomas was found guilty of 2nd-degree murder and sentenced to 12 years in prison.
Since the loss our Brother, the ATU are strong advocates for safe transit for everybody. ATU continues to lobby Municipal, Provincial, and Federal Governments to deal with the growing number of disturbing incidents on buses and bus stops and to make transit safe for all.
August 28, 2024: ATU Local 1505 has established a permanent memorial for Irvine 'Jubal' Fraser, a Winnipeg Transit bus operator who tragically passed away on February 14, 2017, while on duty. This memorial honors his memory and provides a secure place where members can mourn privately and pay their respects. Over the years, attempts to create memorials at the transit stop where he passed were often thwarted by vandalism or weather, making this permanent tribute a meaningful way to ensure that Jubal’s legacy endures in a protected and respectful location. Thank you to the University of Manitoba for your generous support in hosting and raising the memorial banner at the bus operator staging area.
