PRESS RELEASE - February 7, 2024
Winnipeg, February 7, 2024 — The Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1505 acknowledges the recent budget announcements by the City of Winnipeg, particularly the allocation of 2.5 million dollars over four years towards funding the transit safety team. While we appreciate this investment, we continue to urge for additional provincial funding to bolster these critical initiatives.
The commitment of 2.7 million dollars for the retrofit of safety shield extensions is a step in the right direction towards ensuring the safety and well-being of transit operators. ATU Local 1505 will continue to look for improved technologies to aid in the safety of employees and the ridership.
Furthermore, we are pleased to see capital funding improvements supported by provincial and federal governments for significant projects such as the replacement of the North garage, retrofit of wheelchair securement on transit vehicles, and upcoming enhancements to automatic fare collection systems. These investments demonstrate a commitment to improving transit infrastructure for the benefit of the community.
“Unfortunately,” remarked Chris Scott, President, and Business Agent for ATU Local 1505 “what remains absent from the budget is increased dedicated operational funding for tangible improvements to transit services that directly impact the riding public. ATU Local 1505 advocates for operational funding from all levels of government to ensure the successful implementation of the new Transit Master Plan. Proper scheduling and adequate resources are essential for making this ambitious plan a success.”
Transit is a vital public service that connects communities and drives economic growth. As such, it is imperative that sufficient operational funding is allocated to meet the evolving needs of our city's transit system. ATU Local 1505 stands ready to work collaboratively with all stakeholders to advocate for the necessary resources to enhance transit services for all Winnipeggers.
