ATU Local 1505 Welcomes Winnipeg Transit's Announcement of Live Feeds to Enhance Safety

Winnipeg, Manitoba – June 4, 2024 – The Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1505, representing the dedicated employees and members of Winnipeg Transit, is pleased to support a significant advancement in safety and security measures. Winnipeg Transit has introduced live feeds on its 607 buses, a vital tool aimed at improving safety for operators and passengers alike.

This initiative, which enables real-time video monitoring, represents a major step forward in ensuring the safety and security of all transit users. The live feed technology will provide the police and transit dispatch and inspectors with immediate access to visual information, allowing for rapid response to incidents and enhancing overall security on the transit system.

Chris Scott, President of ATU Local 1505, expressed his support for the initiative: "The introduction of live feeds is a critical development in protecting our transit operators and passengers. This technology will not only act as a deterrent to potential wrongdoers but also ensure that any incidents can be addressed swiftly and effectively. We are committed to working closely with Winnipeg Transit and law enforcement to ensure the safety of our members and the public." ATU Local 1505 will also be monitoring to ensure the purpose of the live feed is to enhance safety on the service and not to monitor employees for the purpose of discipline.

The implementation of live feeds is part of Winnipeg Transit's ongoing efforts to modernize and improve the transit system. By integrating advanced technology, Winnipeg Transit is taking proactive measures to address safety concerns and enhance the overall transit experience for everyone.

ATU Local 1505 is committed to advocating for the safety and well-being of its members. The introduction of live feeds is a positive step toward creating a safer transit environment for everyone. We look forward to continued collaboration with Winnipeg Transit and other stakeholders to further enhance the safety and security of our transit system with enhanced safety barriers and continued funding of the Transit Community Safety Team.
