ATU Local 1505 Transit Union Expresses Concerns Over New Safety Shield Designs

Winnipeg, Manitoba, June 6, 2024 – Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1505, representing the dedicated transit operators of Winnipeg Transit, acknowledges the ongoing efforts of Winnipeg Transit to enhance the safety of its operators through the installation of new safety shields. However, after thorough discussions and survey results from our membership, it has become clear that the current designs are missing crucial safety features that must be addressed.

Key Concerns Highlighted by Our Membership:

Glare Issues: One of the most significant concerns raised is the issue of glare. Glare impedes the operator's vision, creating hazardous driving conditions. While it is understood that no shield can entirely eliminate glare, there are certain designs available that can drastically mitigate this issue.

Incomplete Enclosure: The current design lacks a top piece, leaving operators vulnerable to objects being thrown over the shield. This poses a serious risk as the public can still throw items such as hot coffee or other dangerous objects into the operator's compartment. A full enclosure with no public contact is essential to protect our operators from such incidents.

Reach-Around Risk: The shield design does not extend fully to the windshield, allowing individuals to reach around and potentially strike operators or grab the steering wheel. This is a significant safety hazard, especially when buses are traveling at higher speeds. To ensure the highest level of safety, a full enclosure that prevents any reach-around attempts is necessary.

Communication Challenges: Our role is not solely limited to driving; it also involves substantial customer service. Approximately 60% of our job involves interacting with the public we serve. While a full enclosure is crucial for protection, it should not impede our ability to communicate effectively with passengers. We recommend the installation of a communication device within the shield to maintain the high standard of customer service our community expects and deserves.

"Our primary concern is the safety and well-being of our members and the passengers they serve.” Commented Chris Scott, President of ATU local 1505. “While we appreciate Winnipeg Transit's initiative to implement improved safety shields, it is imperative that these designs fully address the real-world challenges faced by our operators. We are calling on Winnipeg Transit to consider these essential modifications to ensure that safety is not compromised, and that our operators can continue to perform their duties effectively."
